Miami Beach Plans to Improve “Blueways”

July 31, 2014

North Beach - Normandy Isle

During their initial public workshop on June 22nd, 2014, the City of Miami Beach announced their plans to improve the waterways that surround and connect our charming communities. Their goal is to connect “people to the water at convenient locations allowing aquatic recreational opportunity and transportation by water within a community” as described by the City. What does this mean for residents? Imagine having access points to the water just steps from your home. Or, what we would really enjoy, is increased public access for launching kayaks or SUPs. These thoughts were voiced by locals at the first meeting as desires for the blueway improvement project.

The second Community Input Meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 5 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Miami Beach Rowing Club/Ronald W. Shane Center located at 6500 Indian Creek Drive in Miami Beach. This is a free workshop that is open to the public. We encourage you to attend and voice your opinions and pitch ideas to the development team. More details on the project will be released at this second meeting as well.

Officials are working with ESDA, ATM, and Lambert Advisory urban development crews to initiate a 5 year plan that will encourage the participation of residents and tourists alike in the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.

Planned improvement will target the following sites:

With over half of these possible sites targeting North Beach, we’re excited about the potential increase of interaction between residents and the water in our community. The blueways project will add to the many reasons why North Beach is the best place to live. Residents here truly experience the quintessential Miami Beach lifestyle with the abundance of amenities like Normandy Pool & Park, the North Beach Bandshell, Normandy Shores Golf Club, multiple bark parks, tot lots, and more, but we feel that having these easy access points to the water will further increase the overall quality of life in the area.

The team’s design goal is to learn about our communities and listen to our ideas and aspirations in order to develop their vision. Therefore, we urge you to attend the next community input meeting on August 5th to vocalize your thoughts or concerns about enhancing the blueways. What would it mean for you to have a blueway in your neighborhood?
