Art Basel Paints the Town in North BeachDecember 4, 2014
As the cars start pouring in from John F Kennedy Causeway and pile up on 71st Street, we quickly realize, Art Basel is upon us. This year North Beach has reason to brag. As Miami Beach’s most up-and-coming area, North Beach will host multiple events this year. Particularly, North Beach is proud to be the new host of SELECT Fair, one of Art Basel’s largest satellite events.
Moving from last year’s South Beach location at 1732 Collins Ave, SELECT Fair is now being held just east of the newly renovated North Shore Bandshell at 73rd and Collins Avenue. The fair started Tuesday, December 2nd and will run until Sunday, December 7th. This year’s fair, curated by Tim Goossens, features “The Conductor”, a hip-hop inspired performance piece centered around body-language. Rachel Mason’s sculptural doll performance “Starseeds” is also featured, which is an ode of sorts to the artist’s heroines and powerful female icons from Frida Kahlo to Beyonce. Also showcased is New York City’s most controversial art gallery, VECTOR, by artist JJ Brine, which can be described as an ever-evolving depiction of a post-government universe placed in the year 2018 where LGBT is the dominant culture. Definitely a must see!
Attached to the 40,000 square foot SELECT tent is ARTHAUS, the exclusive luxury lounge presented by Mercedes-AMG & Lufthansa First Class, which will be hosting live events and performances. Nearby stands the North Shore Bandshell ampitheatre which SELECT will occupy with music and art performances, making this location the perfect place to hit all the festivities in one night.
Just a few blocks south at the Deauville Beach Resort at 67th and Collins Avenue, the NADA Fair opens today, returning for the 5th year in a row. Once located at the Ice Palace in Miami, and on Lincoln Road in South Beach years before, NADA decided to relocate to North Beach in 2009 in order to lower booth costs and accommodate younger galleries. This year, NADA has over 80 exhibitors and will run from today until Sunday, December 7th. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.newartdealers.org/Fairs/2014/MiamiBeach.
Located just outside of North Beach and opening to the public tomorrow is PULSE Miami Beach, which is relocating this year from the Ice Palace to Indian Creek Beach at 4601 Collins Avenue. PULSE is well-known for showcasing the latest contemporary art and has a reputation for attracting clientele from all over the globe. This premiere satellite event is only open today for an exclusive Private Preview Brunch but will be open to the public tomorrow until Sunday, December 7. For more information, visit www.pulse-art.com.
We’re excited to have these Art Basel events in our own backyard and feel that it will allow visitors to explore the beauty of North Beach and further efforts to revitalize the community. Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine advocates for North Beach and has proudly endorsed SELECT Fair’s decision to relocate in his welcome letter.
